The much-anticipated return of Aaron Rodgers was overshadowed by Jordan Mason, who stepped in and dazzled for the 49ers with a performance that included 147 rushing yards and a touchdown against the New York Jets.
Mason's physical running style dominated the Jets' defense, allowing the 49ers to score on eight consecutive drives. This played a pivotal role in spoiling Rodgers' comeback and led to a 32-19 victory for San Francisco.
While Rodgers managed to throw for 167 yards and a touchdown, he also had an interception. Although he showed flashes of his MVP-level talent, Rodgers admitted that his performance could have been better.
Purdy contributed significantly by throwing for 231 yards and orchestrating a balanced offense that featured a 2-yard touchdown run by Deebo Samuel and six field goals from Jake Moody, tying the franchise record.
The Jets' defense struggled to apply pressure due to the absence of edge rusher Haason Reddick, who is holding out.
The 49ers began to pull away from the Jets in the game around halftime with a field goal followed by Mason's touchdown run, increasing their lead from 13-7 to 23-7.
Rodgers was intercepted on the Jets' subsequent drive, and they failed to gain any momentum with a three-and-out to start the second half.
Rodgers did manage to throw his first touchdown pass in 610 days with a 36-yard completion to Allen Lazard, but this was not enough to mount a comeback for the Jets.
Regarding injuries, Jets cornerback Michael Carter left the game with an ankle injury, and 49ers left guard Aaron Banks exited with a calf injury.
Looking ahead, the Jets are set to visit Tennessee, while the 49ers will travel to Minnesota.
