Chicago Bears News & Updates

Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson of the Chicago Bears expressed regret for his involvement in the Hail Mary touchdown that led to the team's defeat against the Washington Commanders.

As the final play was set in motion, Stevenson exchanged words with fans, which delayed his coverage and left wide receiver Noah Brown from the Commanders unguarded. This allowed Brown to catch the game-winning touchdown pass.

Stevenson admitted his error and extended an apology to his fellow team members.

Coach Matt Eberflus verified that Stevenson was tasked with blocking Brown, while safety Kevin Byard III was responsible for intercepting the pass.

Earlier in the quarter, Stevenson also received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for verbal exchanges with Commanders players.

Eberflus commented that Stevenson addressing his teammates demonstrated accountability, but he refrained from discussing any additional measures that might be taken.

Tight end Cole Kmet mentioned that the team's players valued Stevenson's apology and highlighted the educational aspect of the incident.

Despite Byard's suggestion that the Bears could have been more defensive on the penultimate play, Eberflus justified his decision not to adopt a more aggressive defense.
