Mike Westhoff, who served as the assistant head coach for the Denver Broncos, has stepped down from his position because of health-related issues. Last Wednesday, at the age of 76, he encountered vision difficulties and subsequently underwent medical tests.
Following discussions with his doctors, Westhoff chose to focus on his health. He admitted that while making this decision was challenging, it served as an important reminder for him. He also expressed his appreciation for Broncos head coach Sean Payton and extended his best wishes to the team.
Westhoff is well-known for his expertise in coaching special teams and has previously collaborated with Payton when they were part of the New Orleans Saints. He also worked alongside Broncos special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica and assistant Chris Banjo. Westhoff became part of the Broncos after Payton's appointment as head coach.
Having survived cancer, Westhoff possesses vast experience in the NFL. His career includes a significant tenure of 15 years with the Miami Dolphins and 12 seasons with the New York Jets.
