Buffalo Bills News & Updates

At 85, Billy Shaw, a celebrated figure in the American Football League, died due to hyponatremia.

During his time with the Buffalo Bills, Shaw was a remarkable guard, contributing significantly to their powerful rushing game in the 1960s. His college career at Georgia Tech was distinguished by his exceptional performance on both offense and defense.

Over his nine-season career in the AFL, Shaw achieved eight All-Star recognitions, five All-AFL mentions, and won two AFL championships. He was also part of both the All-Time AFL team and the 1960s All-Decade pro football team.

The President of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Jim Porter, emphasized Shaw's athletic prowess and significant influence on the Bills, describing how he helped shape them into a strong team known for their influential rushing approach.

Shaw was initially drafted by the Buffalo Bills and the Dallas Cowboys, but he chose to join the AFL. He believed the league was a better fit for his talents and his role as a left guard.

Differing from other teams in the AFL, the Bills adopted a strategy focused on running the ball, with Shaw excelling in his role as a pulling guard, expertly guiding and blocking for ball carriers further down the field.

Jerry Smith, who previously coached the Bills' offensive line, credited Shaw as being the key player behind the team's consecutive AFL titles in the 1964 and 1965 seasons.
