Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott took responsibility for the decisions made during the final moments of the game that allowed the Texans to regain possession and ultimately secure a win with a 59-yard field goal.
With the score tied, the Bills forced the Texans to punt with 41 seconds left on the clock. The Texans, however, retained three timeouts and had a dependable field goal kicker. McDermott chose not to accept the option of a 10-second runoff, although he later mentioned they had considered this choice.
Once they regained possession, the Bills experienced three straight incomplete passes thrown by Josh Allen, a surprise given his usual efficiency. McDermott admitted he should have run the ball right away to limit the Texans' chance to advance.
The incomplete passes were a result of tight coverage and a dropped catch by Keon Coleman. Offensive linemen Connor McGovern and David Edwards supported the decision to play aggressively, while Allen reflected on his wish to have succeeded in those moments.
The Texans managed a 13-yard punt return followed by a 5-yard gain, creating an opportunity for a 59-yard field goal attempt. Communication issues among the Bills, involving linebacker Dorian Williams and cornerback Rasul Douglas, led to Williams arriving late to the field.
Ka'imi Fairbairn successfully kicked the field goal for the Texans' win, while the Bills' receivers completed only 4 of 18 targets, marking their worst reception rate in over ten years.
Allen's performance of completing 9 out of 30 pass attempts reflected his lowest completion percentage in a game with at least 30 throws in the past three decades. He admitted the need for personal improvement in both play and ball placement, with receivers pointing to communication breakdowns and self-made mistakes as contributing factors.
