The Kansas City Chiefs and wide receiver Rashee Rice are hopeful that his knee injury is not as serious as first thought, suggesting that his recovery period may be shorter than initially expected.
There is little chance that Rice will return to play this season, but the full scope of his injury will become clear after his surgery, which is planned for Tuesday morning.
Rice sustained an injury to his right knee during the Chiefs' Week 4 win against the Los Angeles Chargers. There was speculation that he might have torn his ACL, though the team has not officially revealed details about the injury. Nevertheless, a source confirmed that there is damage to the lateral collateral ligament in his knee.
The Chiefs placed Rice on injured reserve on Thursday, meaning he will be unavailable for at least the next four games.
The injury took place when quarterback Patrick Mahomes accidentally collided with Rice's knee as they both pursued a Chargers fumble after an interception. Heading into Week 4, Rice was leading the NFL in receptions with 24 and was second in yards, totaling 288.
