Todd Bowles, the coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, justified his choice to kick an extra point instead of attempting a two-point conversion after a late touchdown during Monday night's matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, which ended in an overtime loss for his team.
With only 30 seconds remaining in regulation, the Buccaneers were down by seven points when they scored a touchdown. Bowles decided against going for a two-point conversion that would have given them a one-point lead, opting for the extra point to push the game into overtime instead.
Bowles explained his reasoning was based on the slippery field conditions, which he thought made overtime a more favorable scenario for a win. However, the Chiefs quickly capitalized in overtime, securing a victory with a touchdown on their first possession.
While admitting that decisions made during the game were less than perfect, Bowles highlighted the importance of avoiding a losing mentality and focusing on the team’s improvement.
This defeat puts the Buccaneers at a 4-5 record for the season, marking their third consecutive loss. They hope to reverse their fortunes in the upcoming home game against an NFC competitor.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield voiced his dissatisfaction after losing the coin toss in overtime, which allowed the Chiefs to take the first possession. He pointed out the necessity for the team to eradicate errors and find strategies to secure victories.
Despite the close match against the league's only undefeated team, Mayfield dismissed the idea of taking solace in that fact. He stressed that the main focus for the team should be on their own performance and finding ways to improve.
