At the Rose Bowl, Penn State, ranked 18th, narrowly edged out 10th-ranked Michigan with a 23-20 victory in a thrilling contest that came down to the wire.
Penn State started strong with an initial field goal, but Michigan quickly countered with a touchdown. The Nittany Lions regained the lead with another field goal, although the Wolverines soon answered with another touchdown. Sean Clifford of Penn State connected with Theo Johnson for a touchdown pass, giving the Nittany Lions a slim advantage as they headed into halftime.
In the second half, Michigan's Corum notched a touchdown to level the score, but Jake Pinegar's field goal restored Penn State's lead. Corum scored again, briefly putting Michigan ahead. However, Clifford hit Allar for a touchdown with just over 11 minutes left on the clock, swinging the game back in favor of Penn State.
Michigan had a late opportunity to equalize, but their field goal attempt went wide right. Penn State secured the hard-won victory, improving their season record to 4-0, while Michigan experienced their first loss, dropping to 4-1.
