According to sources, Christian McCaffrey won't be playing in Thursday's game against the Seahawks, even though he is eligible to come off injured reserve.
He has been struggling with calf and Achilles problems, but is showing progress during practice. Encouragingly, his Achilles condition hasn't worsened following his on-field activities.
Although he has bilateral Achilles tendinitis, the primary concern is focused on one leg. Sources suggest that he is successfully avoiding any setbacks as he works towards returning.
McCaffrey might play on October 20 against the Chiefs or on October 27 against the Cowboys. Nevertheless, the 49ers might decide to rest him through their bye week, aiming for his return on November 10 against the Buccaneers.
He sought advice from a specialist in Germany regarding his Achilles issue and had been out of practice for four weeks before participating on a limited basis just before the season started. He was withdrawn from the season opener at the last minute and was placed on injured reserve after experiencing pain during a practice session.
McCaffrey was a standout performer last season, leading the NFL in scrimmage yards and touchdowns, which earned him the AP Offensive Player of the Year award.
