The Cleveland Browns have added quarterback Bailey Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad, as reported by a source to ESPN on Tuesday. This decision bolsters their options at quarterback following Deshaun Watson's season-ending Achilles injury.
At 25 years old, Zappe could potentially act as the backup for Jameis Winston during this Sunday's matchup against the Baltimore Ravens. The availability of Dorian Thompson-Robinson is still in doubt. After Watson's injury, Thompson-Robinson stepped in but suffered a finger injury during the Browns' defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN indicates that surgery is not required for him.
Drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round in 2022, Zappe started eight games in New England. During that time, he completed 63.2% of his throws for 2,053 yards, achieving 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Browns' intention to bring in Zappe was initially reported by NFL Network.
