In Joe Flacco's first game as the Colts' starting quarterback, the offensive performance was disappointing, reaching season lows in scoring, yardage, and first downs. Nevertheless, Coach Shane Steichen continues to show support for Flacco.
Although Steichen initially believed Flacco gave the Colts the best chance to win, the team slipped to a 4-5 record. Their offense lagged behind, managing only six points, 227 yards, and 13 first downs in their game against the Vikings.
Flacco struggled with inefficiency, particularly on third downs, and he threw an interception during a critical third-down play. Coach Steichen praised Flacco's experience but admitted that the offensive scheme needs to be re-evaluated.
While Anthony Richardson has faced his own challenges, the team missed his ability to make deep throws and contribute with his running skills. Flacco produced only two significant completions, and his average air yards per attempt were notably less than Richardson's.
The Colts also had difficulty establishing the run against the Vikings' formidable run defense, recording just 68 rushing yards, a season low. Richardson's ability to both pass and run has previously provided a needed spark that may have been lacking.
Despite the offensive difficulties, the Colts' defense stood out by forcing three turnovers, including a strip sack that was returned for a touchdown. Nonetheless, this defensive success was overshadowed by the offense's underwhelming performance.
