The Indianapolis Colts have decided to replace their starting quarterback, Anthony Richardson, with the experienced Joe Flacco. This change follows a Tuesday morning meeting where the Colts' coaching staff reviewed Richardson's recent performances and weighed their options, leading to the choice of Flacco as the new starter.
This change follows Richardson's request to be taken out of the game against the Houston Texans on Sunday because he was feeling fatigued. Although Coach Shane Steichen initially claimed this request wouldn't influence team decisions, it seems to have been a factor in their choice to switch quarterbacks.
Within the organization, the Colts assert that Richardson continues to be their future quarterback despite the benching. They view this decision as a chance for Richardson to learn and improve, not as a sign of losing faith in his potential. At 22, Richardson is the youngest starting quarterback in the NFL, having been drafted before turning 21 after only 13 college starts at the University of Florida.
Although the Colts previously emphasized the importance of playing time for Richardson's growth, this decision marks a notable shift in their approach, indicating they have doubts about his current performance level while seeing Flacco, aged 39, as the better immediate choice.
Richardson is expected to take this adjustment in stride and be prepared to step in if necessary. His current completion rate stands at 44.4%, among the lowest in the league. In contrast, Flacco has shown competence in limited action, with 716 passing yards, 7 touchdowns, and 1 interception over parts of three games.
This decision makes Richardson the second first-round quarterback from the last year's draft to be replaced this season. Recently, the Carolina Panthers also opted to bench Bryce Young, choosing Andy Dalton instead.
