The New York Jets, driven to salvage their season and continue their quest to end a five-decade-long Super Bowl drought, are in the process of completing a blockbuster trade for star wide receiver Davante Adams, as reported by sources to ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday.
In return, the Las Vegas Raiders will receive a conditional third-round draft pick that could potentially be upgraded to a second-round selection. For this to occur, Adams would need to be named a first- or second-team All-Pro this season or be on the Jets' active roster for the AFC Championship Game or Super Bowl, sources indicated.
With the trade nearly finalized, Adams traveled to New Jersey on a red-eye flight early Tuesday morning and is currently undergoing a physical, as per a source's information provided to Schefter.
The Jets are set to assume the remainder of Adams' salary, which amounts to $17.5 million this season, with approximately $11.59 million still due. Despite being under contract for 2025 and 2026, his salary is set to increase to $36.25 million annually for each of those years. According to Spotrac.com, the Raiders will carry a dead cap charge of $13.67 million in 2024 and $15.7 million in 2025.
This trade leads to a reunion between Adams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, rekindling one of the most formidable partnerships in recent NFL history.
Adams, approaching his 32nd birthday on December 24th, is a six-time Pro Bowl selection who found remarkable success with Rodgers while both were with the Green Bay Packers. From 2014 to 2021, they amassed 615 completions, 7,529 yards, and 68 touchdowns, as the second-most productive duo in the NFL during that period, only trailing Matt Ryan and Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons.
