In the fourth quarter on Sunday, New York Giants cornerback Deonte Banks reduced his speed while trying to tackle quarterback Jalen Hurts. This led to Hurts securing a 7-yard run and a first down. This incident was the second with Banks this season, as a similar situation took place during a loss to the Dallas Cowboys a few weeks ago.
Banks' performance was criticized by defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson, who shared his disappointment with the rookie. Banks accepted responsibility for the mistake and promised not to repeat it, showing full accountability for his actions.
Although Banks wasn't fined, there are worries about his performance. As the defender closest to the play, he has conceded four touchdowns, ranking him tied for the second most in the NFL this year. Coach Brian Daboll confirmed that Banks will start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night, underscoring that any issues will be addressed directly with him.
The Giants are seeking better performances from Banks, who was anticipated to be their top cornerback this season. The team's depth at cornerback could be challenged on Monday night, with several team members absent from practice due to injuries.
Banks' lack of effort has been noticed in the locker room. Defensive captain Dexter Lawrence II stated that such performances are not acceptable and that Banks was held responsible for them. Banks mentioned that he misjudged the play against the Eagles but defended his effort, saying he doesn’t have a pattern of slowing down during plays.
Defensive coordinator Shane Bowen mentioned that Banks has been performing well during practice, but the team will assess his performance on Monday night before making any final judgments.
