Even though the Cleveland Browns' offense has struggled early on, quarterback Deshaun Watson maintains that relying more on his mobility isn't the way to energize the team.
When questioned about the potential for more designed runs, Watson made it clear that his primary role is as a quarterback, not a running back. He stressed that his focus remains on making smart decisions rather than taking off with the ball.
Currently, the Browns' offense is ranked 24th in the NFL for rushing yards and has the second-lowest average in yards per play. Additionally, Watson's QBR ranks near the bottom among qualified quarterbacks.
Watson reflects on his time with the Houston Texans, where he accumulated numerous rushing yards, noting that most came from scrambles rather than planned runs. This season, he has rushed for 85 yards, placing him 10th among quarterbacks in that category.
While he concedes that designed runs might offer some benefit, Watson hesitates due to his recent shoulder surgery. He believes that such situations could bring increased criticism for coach Kevin Stefanski if an injury were to occur.
