Pittsburgh Steelers' coach Mike Tomlin addressed the reduced playing time for wide receiver George Pickens during Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys. He stated that it was part of a planned approach called "snap management" and not a reflection on Pickens' effort.
Tomlin explained that the intention behind this strategy is to ensure peak performance throughout the 17-game season, citing a similar approach with defensive lineman Cam Heyward's reduced playing time.
Recently, Pickens' presence on the field has noticeably decreased. In the game against the Cowboys, he participated in only 59% of plays, which is fewer than what teammates Van Jefferson and Calvin Austin III experienced.
Although Pickens played fewer snaps, Tomlin refuted claims that the receiver wasn't giving maximum effort in his route running, suggesting instead that the strategy of managing his workload might be involved.
On a different note, Tomlin has privately discussed Pickens' actions off the field but did acknowledge his eye black message and the incident involving the facemask of Cowboys' Jourdan Lewis.
Tomlin recognized past instances where Pickens showed variable effort and had emotional displays, but he also remarked on the receiver's overall growth and improved ability to handle the spotlight as the team's primary receiver.
With continued optimism about Pickens' potential, Tomlin believes that since joining the Steelers, Pickens has shown signs of maturation and development.
