In one instance during a third-down play, a potential touchdown pass to Troy Franklin was not completed, leading to a heated discussion between Nix and Payton. This discussion continued on the sidelines and included Franklin and Courtland Sutton, who tried to defuse the situation.

Payton compared Nix's attitude to Ferris Bueller, known for his rebellious streak in the film "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," noting his tendency to follow his own path.

Nix acknowledged the sideline interaction with a smile, sharing that he has mutual admiration with Payton.

This encounter was the most notable sideline disagreement between Payton and a Broncos quarterback since his remarks about Russell Wilson in December of the previous year.

Despite the sideline tension, Nix went on to throw his second touchdown pass of the game and rushed for a touchdown in the last quarter.

Nix mentioned "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," commenting that both he and Payton have a strong competitive spirit and the ability to move on quickly after disputes.

Following the game, Nix wore a vintage John Elway jersey, paying tribute to the Broncos’ alumni weekend and the celebrated 1977 Orange Crush defense.
