During the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the New York Giants took out Daniel Jones, their starting quarterback, early in the fourth quarter. Coach Brian Daboll explained after the game that the decision was made to try and energize the team. The game ended with the Giants losing 28-3.
Despite this change, Daboll confirmed that Jones will remain the starter over Drew Lock, who also faced difficulties during Sunday's game.
The Giants are scheduled to face the Pittsburgh Steelers away from home in a Monday night game next week.
Daboll stated that the switch occurred when the score was 28-3, and the team had only achieved 100 yards, aiming to infuse some energy. He emphasized that Jones would continue as the starting quarterback.
Jones expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, saying he was frustrated with being taken out.
The Giants, now with a 2-5 record, only managed 119 total yards in the game. Former star running back Saquon Barkley played against his old team on their field. Jones completed 14 of 21 passes for 99 yards and was sacked seven times during the game.
Lock's performance saw him completing 3 of 8 passes for 6 yards, with the overall performance of the Giants' offense remaining largely unchanged with him in charge.
In their home games this season, New York has only scored one touchdown, and the 31 points they have accumulated in those games are among the lowest over the last four decades.
According to Daboll, the performance of the quarterback, coaching, and overall execution were not up to the mark.
The decision to bench Jones was seen as a last-ditch effort by Daboll. He approached Jones with the decision while the Eagles had possession early in the fourth quarter.
