Nearly nineteen months ago, Jake Bates, a kicker for the Detroit Lions, was preparing to become a salesman in Houston, believing his NFL aspirations were over. However, on Sunday evening, he celebrated a game-winning 52-yard field goal, helping the Lions rally from a 16-point deficit to defeat the Texans 26-23.
Bates, who previously played for the Michigan Panthers in the UFL last season, expressed gratitude for the opportunity and remarked how his achievements felt surreal.
Originally from Tomball, Texas, Bates also succeeded in a 58-yard field goal with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter, which evened the score at 23-23, making it the third-longest field goal in the team's history.
His crucial field goals were instrumental in securing Detroit's victory, despite Lions quarterback Jared Goff having thrown a career-high of five interceptions.
Even with these challenges, Goff led the Lions to their eighth win of the season, equalling the team's best start since 1954.
Following the victory, Bates received commendation from his teammates, including Carlton Davis, who expressed relief at his decisive kick.
In Week 7, Bates had also achieved a game-winning 44-yard field goal, leading the Lions to a divisional triumph. He has successfully completed all 14 field goal attempts this season.
Goff became just the fourth quarterback in NFL history to throw five interceptions on the road and still secure a win. This was also the highest number of interceptions thrown in a prime-time game since Drew Brees in 2012.
In spite of his difficulties, Goff maintained his confidence and credited his defense for their support.
The Lions set a record by overcoming the largest halftime deficit (16 points) ever for a winning team that threw five or more interceptions.
