The New Orleans Saints rookie, Khristian Boyd, has received a $4,600 fine for his hit on Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith.
Typically, first-time offenders receive a $16,883 fine for hits on defenseless players, but this amount cannot surpass 10% of a player's weekly salary cap hit. Boyd's salary cap hit for 2024 is $844,215, translating to a weekly cap hit of roughly $46,900.
During the Eaglesâ 15-12 victory over the Saints, two defenders tried to tackle Smith following a five-yard catch in the fourth quarter. Boyd approached from a different angle and struck Smith from behind, which knocked off his helmet.
Smith then entered concussion protocol and missed the rest of the game, remaining in protocol as of Thursday afternoon.
A sixth-round draft pick in 2024, Boyd did not receive a penalty for the action and later stated on Instagram that he would never intentionally injure an opponent, though he has since deleted the post.
Teammate Cameron Jordan came to Boydâs defense on his podcast, suggesting Boyd was merely playing until the whistle sounded.
Jordan disapproved of player injuries but asserted that Boyd did not intend to harm Smith.
Jordan emphasized the importance of playing from snap to whistle.
