Cleveland Browns News & Updates

The Detroit Lions have made a trade to acquire veteran pass rusher Za'Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns. In return, the Browns will receive draft picks in the form of a fifth-round selection in 2025 and a sixth-round selection in 2026, while the Lions will obtain Smith and a seventh-round pick for 2026.

The Lions have been in need of enhancing their pass rush capabilities since Aidan Hutchinson sustained a leg injury the previous month. Smith, who has been recognized as a Pro Bowler three times, boasts a career total of 65 sacks. The team's pass rush effectiveness has declined following Hutchinson's injury.

Before his injury, Hutchinson had achieved 7.5 sacks across five games and might not be able to return this season. Despite winning their last six games, the Lions have struggled to maintain their pass rush, managing only one sack over their two recent matches.

This trade marks Smith as the second experienced player the Browns have parted with this season amidst their struggles. They previously traded wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Bills in the preceding month.
