The Nevada Supreme Court is set to examine the lawsuit brought by Jon Gruden, who previously coached the Las Vegas Raiders, against the NFL. Although a panel dismissed the lawsuit earlier, the entire court will now reevaluate that decision.
The NFL contends that the issue should be resolved through arbitration, potentially under the supervision of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. However, a justice expressing dissent stated concerns about Goodell's involvement in arbitrating a dispute where he is personally implicated.
Gruden claims that the NFL and Goodell coerced the Raiders into dismissing him by leaking emails with offensive remarks he made during his tenure at ESPN. He argues that the selective release of these emails was aimed at tarnishing his career and sponsorship opportunities.
Following a lower court's refusal to dismiss the case or mandate arbitration overseen by Goodell, the NFL escalated the matter to the Nevada Supreme Court. The judge pointed to Gruden's accusation that the league specifically leaked only his emails as indicative of a deliberate intent to harm.
Gruden's coaching career includes leading the Raiders in both Las Vegas and Oakland, as well as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he secured a Super Bowl victory in 2003. Before rejoining the Raiders in 2018, he worked as an analyst for ESPN.
