Interim coach of the New York Jets, Jeff Ulbrich, has removed Nathaniel Hackett from his role of calling plays as the offensive coordinator. In his place, Todd Downing, the former offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, will oversee the game plan and handle play-calling duties.
Hackett shares a close connection with Aaron Rodgers, who reportedly had an interest in being traded to the Jets last year partly due to this relationship. Ulbrich has spoken with Rodgers about the change and has secured his backing.
Downing is set to make his debut as the playcaller against the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. The Jets seek to enhance their offensive performance, which has been lacking under Hackett, placing them among the lowest in the league for points and total yards per game.
Ulbrich intends to bring his own influence to the offense, aspiring for the team to display more confidence and aggressiveness on the field. He values Downing's past experience with assertive offenses that played to their strength as a positive addition to the Jets' game strategy.
