Baltimore Ravens News & Updates

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith received a fine from the NFL for employing a hip-drop tackle on Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Chris Godwin, which led to Godwin dislocating his ankle.

This tackle happened with slightly more than a minute left in the game and caused a significant injury to Godwin. Smith is set to pay a $16,833 fine, but he has the option to appeal.

Conversely, Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield won’t be punished for using a nicotine pouch while on the sideline, though he could face a financial penalty if he persists.

Hip-drop tackles involve the defender grabbing the runner with both hands, destabilizing themselves by lowering their body, and then landing on the runner's legs below the knee. The NFL bans these tackles because they frequently result in lower body injuries.

This season, Godwin has been one of the top performers, but he underwent surgery and is anticipated to be sidelined for the remainder of the year.

Smith conveyed his concern for Godwin, noting that he never aims to hurt fellow players and wishes him a swift recovery.
