The New England Patriots' rookie quarterback, Drake Maye, is set to take part in Wednesday's practice while adhering to the NFL's concussion protocol.
Coach Jerod Mayo mentioned that Maye's participation in Sunday's away game against the Tennessee Titans is still uncertain, and the team will make adjustments as necessary. The next quarterbacks available on the roster are Jacoby Brissett and Joe Milton III.
Mayo explained that Maye would throw occasionally during practice, albeit in a limited capacity. Medical professionals will decide when he is cleared to play, and the team will follow their advice along with league policy.
Mayo expressed confidence that if the league gives clearance, Maye will be prepared to play. He also showed trust in Jacoby Brissett's skills as a ready veteran, indicating the team's willingness to adapt as needed.
For a player to be eligible to return to play, clearance by an independent doctor, the final step in the league's concussion protocol, is required.
Maye was placed in concussion protocol in the second quarter of Sunday's 25-22 win over the New York Jets, a decision based on observation from the NFL's independent spotter.
Despite a helmet-to-helmet hit by linebacker Jamien Sherwood in the first quarter, Maye stayed in the game, played through four additional plays, and then went to the sideline for evaluation at the medical tent.
He later went to the locker room for further assessment. At halftime, Maye indicated he wished to continue playing.
Coach Mayo noted that Maye remains in positive spirits, saying his mood was good after the game and praising his ability to make strong throws post-collision.
Jacoby Brissett stepped in for Maye during the remaining three quarters and successfully led the team through a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter.
