Baltimore Ravens News & Updates

Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith chose not to comment on possible NFL fines but firmly stated that he did not intend to harm Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury on Monday night.

The NFL is currently examining Smith's tackle to assess whether it falls under the category of a hip-drop tackle, which is now prohibited by league regulations. If classified as such, Smith may be subject to a fine.

Smith emphasized that his goal is never to injure another player, expressing a desire for everyone to return home safely, even if they experience some bruising.

A hip-drop tackle involves the tackler grabbing the ball carrier, rotating and dropping their hips, and landing on the opponent's leg below the knee. The Ravens have strongly advocated against hip-drop tackles following a similar injury sustained by tight end Mark Andrews last season.

In the game on Monday night, Godwin caught a pass and was tackled by Smith, resulting in a dislocated ankle. Smith expressed his sympathies for Godwin's injury and wished him a quick recovery.

Smith conveyed his high regard for Godwin and his achievements, acknowledging that injuries are unfortunate but are a part of their demanding and physical sport. Godwin's season was cut short, as he led the NFL in catches and was second in receiving yards.
