Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith successfully challenged his $16,883 fine for unnecessary roughness on Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin. The NFL hearing officer concluded that Smith's tackle on Godwin did not qualify as a hip-drop tackle, thereby reversing the earlier penalty.
The original fine arose from an incident during the Ravens' win against the Buccaneers. After Smith's tackle resulted in Godwin's season-ending ankle injury, the league classified the move as a hip-drop tackle. Nevertheless, Smith's appeal asserted that the tackle lacked the required elements for such a classification.
Smith has a track record of successfully contesting fines. Earlier this season, a fine for a horse-collar tackle was also rescinded. The 27-year-old linebacker has made a notable impact with 97 tackles this year, proving resilient despite confronting these issues.
