Erik McCoy, who plays center for the Saints, will undergo groin surgery this week and will be sidelined for some time.
According to the NFL Network, McCoy, a team captain and recent Pro Bowl selection, might be absent for six to eight weeks after his surgery. This marks the second major setback for the Saints' offensive line this season, following All-Pro right tackle Ryan Ramczyk's placement on injured reserve before training camp due to knee problems.
McCoy left Sunday's game against the Eagles after only three snaps and did not return, having been evaluated in the locker room. The Saints experienced their worst offensive performance of the season in his absence.
Saints quarterback Derek Carr commented on the situation after the game, stating that losing a player like Erik is a significant blow. He acknowledged McCoy's leadership on the team but stressed the importance of adapting and maintaining high expectations despite the loss.
In McCoy's absence, the Saints repositioned left guard Lucas Patrick to the center spot, with Olisaemeka Udoh stepping in for Patrick. Coach Dennis Allen recognized the difficulty of the situation but complimented Patrick's performance in the new role.
Patrick is officially McCoy's backup on the depth chart and has prior center experience with the Packers and Bears. Shane Lemieux from the practice squad started at center for the third preseason game. Last year, Josh Andrews was promoted from the practice squad when McCoy missed games, and Cesar Ruiz took over the center position at the start of the 2021 season due to McCoy's absence.
