The New Orleans Saints made a swift decision to start rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after their starting quarterback, Derek Carr, sustained an oblique injury.
Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak informed Rattler on Tuesday about his starting role. Rattler mentioned that Kubiak advised him to prepare thoroughly. Carr's absence was confirmed on Friday, along with the absence of tight end Taysom Hill and safety Will Harris.
The team opted for Rattler instead of second-year player Jake Haener, who has been taking practice reps behind Carr this season. Previously, Rattler had not been active, serving as the third quarterback.
Rattler shared his excitement and thanked the team for their belief in him while also recognizing the unfortunate nature of Carr’s injury.
He noted that he has been preparing for this moment throughout his life, acknowledging potential pregame nerves and commending the offensive staff for customizing the game strategy to align with his strengths.
Coach Dennis Allen and Kubiak praised Rattler's disposition as the game approached, with Kubiak characterizing him as confident and self-assured.
Rattler has been supported by family, friends, and former Saints quarterback Archie Manning, with Carr also offering guidance.
