Steelers Secure Season-Opening Win Thanks to Boswell's Historic Feat

Chris Boswell showcased his exceptional kicking skills in Pittsburgh's season opener against Atlanta, successfully hitting six field goals. Three of these were from over 50 yards, contributing all of Pittsburgh's points in their 18-10 victory.

In his debut replacing the injured Russell Wilson, Justin Fields leaned heavily on Boswell's contributions. Additionally, a solid defensive effort made things challenging for Kirk Cousins, who was making his debut as Atlanta's quarterback.

Beyond his field goals, Boswell displayed remarkable accuracy and versatility, including a crucial 43-yard punt in the closing minutes that the Falcons couldn’t return.

Russell Wilson, though inactive as the third quarterback, provided support from the sidelines. Pittsburgh’s new coordinator, Arthur Smith, who was previously dismissed by Atlanta after three seasons, achieved a sense of payback against his former team.

Atlanta’s aspirations were thwarted as Cousins struggled, throwing two interceptions. His performance highlighted ongoing quarterback issues for the team, especially with first-round pick Michael Penix Jr. waiting in the wings.

Conversely, Fields demonstrated greater stability, completing 17 of 23 passes and avoiding the costly errors that plagued Cousins. The Steelers also capitalized on a fumble recovery by T.J. Watt, who forced two additional fumbles that were later overturned.

Smith’s return as the Steelers' offensive coordinator was gratifying despite the team's offensive limitations. Fields acknowledged Smith’s competitive drive and his ambition for higher scores, a goal they aim to achieve in future matches.

Pittsburgh’s next game is an away fixture against Denver, where Wilson, if healthy, will have the opportunity to prove himself against his former team. Meanwhile, Atlanta travels to Philadelphia for a prime-time showdown against the Eagles.
