Jim Donovan, a well-known Browns radio announcer, passed away at the age of 68. After stepping back from broadcasting and facing a battle with cancer, he had been narrating Cleveland Browns games since their return in 1999.
The Browns' owners, the Haslams, shared their deep sadness and mentioned that his influence as the team's announcer for 25 years was immeasurable. They highlighted how he connected with fans weekly, bringing his love for the team and his expertise in broadcasting.
Donovan, affectionately called "Jimmy," was celebrated for his enthusiasm, humor, and professionalism. He was honored with induction into the Browns' Legends Club and the Greater Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame before his illness.
In a sincere letter, Donovan expressed gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support, stating that being the announcer for the Browns was his greatest honor and appreciating the love and prayers from the extended community.
In 2000, Donovan was diagnosed with leukemia and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011. After a brief pause for medical treatment, he returned to broadcasting and reported on the team's playoff journey in 2020.
Donovan started his career in Cleveland in 1985, initially reporting on local sports and covering significant national events, such as the Olympics in 1992 and 1996.
