Los Angeles Chargers News & Updates

Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. is set to miss Sunday’s match against the Kansas City Chiefs as he faces a one-game suspension for multiple unnecessary roughness violations.

The suspension is a result of a hit on Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth during Sunday's game. This incident marks James' seventh career penalty for unnecessary roughness, placing him tied for the second-most in the NFL since 2018.

Although James appealed the suspension, the NFL upheld the decision, citing video evidence that showed him lowering his head and making illegal contact with his helmet.

In a letter addressed to James, the NFL declared that his repeated disregard for player safety rules will not be tolerated. The league stressed the importance of imposing substantial penalties on players who consistently break rules designed to protect player safety.

The Chargers might also be missing several key players for Sunday’s game, including quarterback Justin Herbert, offensive tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater, and outside linebacker Joey Bosa, all due to injuries.
