Detroit Lions News & Updates

In the opening game of the season, Detroit showcased a well-rounded offense to outshine the Rams, reminiscent of their approach in the NFC wild-card game.

David Montgomery clinched the win for the Lions with a touchdown run in overtime, resulting in a 26-20 victory against Matthew Stafford’s team.

Despite surrendering a two-touchdown advantage, Detroit managed to extend the game with a field goal by Jake Bates, won the coin toss in overtime, and organized a drive that led to Montgomery's decisive score.

The Rams initially took the lead with a touchdown catch by Cooper Kupp, but Detroit eventually claimed the lead again in overtime.

The Lions lost their advantage in the third quarter but regained it when Jameson Williams caught a touchdown. However, a turnover from Jared Goff and a drive by Stafford ending in another touchdown by Kupp brought the game to a tie.

Stafford’s ankle injury and a failed pass attempt hindered the Rams' ability to retain possession late in regulation.

Sean McVay stood by his aggressive decision to go for it on downs instead of opting for a field goal earlier in the match.

Stafford delivered a strong performance despite taking numerous hits, and Kupp had a standout game with 14 receptions, marking a career high.

Contributions from Goff and Williams were significant, while Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs each found the endzone with touchdowns.

The Rams dealt with injuries to Puka Nacua, Joe Noteboom, and Steve Avila.

Next up, the Rams travel to Arizona, whereas the Lions prepare to host Tampa Bay in a replay of their previous playoff meeting.
