Minnesota Vikings News & Updates

During a crucial moment in the fourth quarter at SoFi Stadium, a possible facemask penalty involving Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold went unnoticed.

Video reviews showed that Byron Young, a linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams, grabbed Darnold's facemask and pulled him down, resulting in a sack and a safety. This play significantly increased the Rams' lead.

In the NFL's officiating system, the main responsibility for assessing hits on quarterbacks falls to the referee. Referee Tra Blake admitted he did not have a clear view of the play. Umpire Carl Paganelli, who offers additional oversight, was also blocked by other players at the time.

The play could not be reviewed. Following the game, Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell chose not to attribute the defeat to the missed penalty. Darnold recognized the potential foul but stressed the importance of the team's responsibility in avoiding such situations.
