Don Bosseler, renowned as a legend in Miami football and celebrated for elevating the team to national prominence, has died at the age of 88. Noted for his time as an All-American fullback, Bosseler helped Miami reach a No. 6 ranking in 1956, significantly enhancing the program's reputation. His achievements were later honored with his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.
In the 1957 NFL Draft, Bosseler was chosen as the ninth overall pick by Washington, marking his entry as a first-round selection. Over his eight-year career in the league, he accumulated over 3,000 rushing yards and scored 22 touchdowns. His performance earned him a spot in the Pro Bowl in 1959.
Archie Manning, who serves as the chairman of the National Football Foundation, highlighted Bosselerās resilience, which garnered him the nickname "Bull," noting the lasting impact he left at Miami.
Despite initially feeling homesick and considering leaving Miami soon after his arrival, Bosseler was persuaded to stay by his roommate's intervention, which involved coach Andy Gustafson. This decision led to Bosseler flourishing as a leading player, achieving All-American status, and earning multiple honors.
Greg Bosseler, Don's son, fondly remembered his father's outstanding performance against Florida in 1956, where he showcased his dominance on the field. Although Don became a legendary figure at Miami, Greg opted to pursue his football career at Florida, a choice his father respected.
Following his departure from football, Bosseler made Miami his home and transitioned into a successful career as a stockbroker. His achievements earned him accolades in various halls of fame, and his name continues to represent Miamiās football heritage while serving as a motivating force for his family.
