Pittsburgh Steelers News & Updates

The Steelers have made strategic moves by bringing in Jets wide receiver Mike Williams in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick and securing Packers pass rusher Preston Smith for a seventh-round selection.

Williams is set to strengthen the Steelers' receiving lineup alongside George Pickens, while Smith is expected to enhance the team's pass-rushing capabilities, which have been affected by injuries.

Although the passing game has shown progress recently, the Steelers identified the need for an additional wide receiver to further support Williams, as well as Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, and Roman Wilson.

Coach Mike Tomlin expressed confidence in the wide receivers' depth and talent, highlighting their ability to take advantage of one-on-one matchups when defenses focus on Pickens.

Williams, with his 6-foot-4 stature and excellent jump ball abilities, brings versatility to the team’s roster, which features predominantly smaller and quicker players.

The Jets decided to trade Williams after acquiring Davante Adams, which made Williams less essential to their plans, although it left them with fewer options at wide receiver until Allen Lazard returns from injury.

Williams fell out of favor with Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers following a critical mistake in route-running that led to a game-losing interception, prompting rare public criticism from Rodgers.

Open to a change, Williams saw limited playing time in recent matches and was receptive to the idea of a trade.

Following Smith’s move to the Steelers, the Packers now have a limited number of experienced players, potentially allowing Lukas Van Ness to take on a larger role as an edge rusher.
