The Washington Commanders will have to move forward without defensive tackle Jonathan Allen for the rest of the season as he has suffered a torn pectoral muscle on his left side.
The injury occurred during the third quarter of their matchup against Baltimore, during which Allen left the field after feeling significant pain following Derrick Henry's touchdown. While there was initial hope for a quick recovery, an MRI confirmed the severity of the tear, indicating surgery is likely soon.
In addition to Allen, Washington faced more setbacks on their defensive line as Dorance Armstrong sustained a rib injury and Javontae Jean-Baptiste hurt his foot. Both are currently undergoing more thorough evaluations.
Drafted in 2017, Allen has been an essential contributor for Washington, earning Pro Bowl selections in both 2021 and 2022 with a total of 16.5 sacks. In this season alone, he achieved two sacks over six games.
With Jonathan Allen sidelined, the Commanders will need to test the depth of their defensive line. Players such as Johnny Newton, Phidarian Mathis, and Efe Obada are potential candidates to step in as replacements.
Allen is playing in the final year of his contract, which offers no guaranteed money, yet his role is pivotal for the team’s defense. His absence will greatly impact the squad's dynamics both on and off the field.
