New York Jets History & Overview

The New York Jets are a professional American football team situated in the New York metropolitan area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a part of the American Football Conference (AFC) East division. Sharing MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with the New York Giants, the Jets are one of two NFL teams based in New York City. Additionally, they are among the quartet of major professional sports teams in the New York metropolitan area, which includes the Giants (NFL), the Yankees (Major League Baseball), and the Rangers (National Hockey League).

Established in 1960 under the name "Titans of New York" and part of the American Football League (AFL), the Jets initially played their home games at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan. In 1963, they relocated to Shea Stadium in Queens. The AFL-NFL merger in 1968 brought the Jets into the NFL as a member of the Eastern Division. That same year, the Jets clinched the AFL Championship, earning a spot in Super Bowl III where they famously defeated the Baltimore Colts 16-7, marking the only Super Bowl victory by an AFL team. Following this triumph, the Jets encountered a period of decline, which saw their record plummet to 1-15 in 1976.

Leon Hess acquired the Jets in 1977 and initiated a team rebuilding process. The early 1980s saw the Jets reach the AFC Championship Game twice within three years. However, the team endured another extended struggle, again hitting a 1-15 record in 1996. With the hiring of Bill Parcells as head coach in 2000, the Jets saw a resurgence, winning three AFC East division titles over the next four years. Despite some success, including an appearance in the AFC Championship Game in 2010, the Jets have not secured a playoff victory since that year.
